01:00 pm - Tori
2 shows in a row in Chicago, with the best show possible last night at the Vic. The Vic! My 9th Tori show and the first I'd been to at such a small venue AND it was general admission, so I was able to get up really close. Closer than the guy who recorded this video. Warning: This might scare you a little ;)

10:06 am - On how I found the cabbies' haven
Yesterday evening, I struggled to get to the entrance of the Chicago/Franklin brown line stop. I had the misfortune of trying to enter from Franklin, only to find out that construction prevents one from doing so, and from accessing Chicago Ave as well without turning around and going around the block. And so I walked west to the next street, Orleans, and then north to Chicago. After turning onto Chicago, I passed by an Indian/Pakistani restaurant that advertised $4.50 dishes. Since this was unusual outside of Devon, and since a memory of a place someone had once mentioned returned to me, I turned back. After having missed 2 brown line trains and having to take a detour (all with the bottom 1/3 of my long skirt soaking wet from the rain, as well), I figured something ought to come out of it.
Upon entering the place, my suspicions were confirmed. This was where the cab drivers hung out. There were many bearded South Asian men, some black men (African immigrants? I'm not sure since I didn't hear any of them speak), and one elderly white man. The only other females in the place were the black girl behind the counter and another black woman at one of the tables in the emptier part of the restaurant. I would have found this disconcerting had people been looking at me, but they were focused on the TV in the corner, set to a Desi (South Asian) channel.
I ordered a half portion for $4.50, and received enough food to last me for 2 meals (Okay, I'm a small eater, and this might not last as long for other people, but for me this was a good deal). I ordered it to go, walked out and past a row of cabs parked at the meters, and finally made it to the brown line station and back home, where I got to eat. The food wasn't excellent, but it was good enough that I would get it again.
The place is called Baba Palace, and it's located at the corner of Chicago and Orleans in the River North neighborhood (just a few blocks away from the tourist traps). I love this pic that's on their website, www.babapalace.com.
Inadvertent discoveries are great, aren't they?

07:25 pm - Buffy Sing-Along
Who wants to attend the Buffy Sing-Along at the Music Box Theatre with me?? January 12th or 13th at midnight. The 13th works much better for me, as I will be flying to Chicago from Orlando on the 12th and will be attending a concert that evening as well.
Details here and here.

06:33 pm - My turn at the letter game ...
10 things I love that begin with the letter T (letter courtesy of
laughingimp :)
1. Tori Amos. If you know me, you know this.
2. Television. I can't stay away. I'm addicted to at least 3 shows.
3. Tara from Buffy. Damn you, Joss Whedon, for killing her off.
4. Twirlies. Meaning, my hairstyle when I twist sections of hair together. Fun fun.
5. Tree-lined streets. All I talked about when I was in NYC and there weren't many of these!
6. Tulips. Oh so pretty - why do they go away so quickly?
7. televisionwithoutpity.com. Great website for recaps of TV shows and message boards about TV shows!
8. Truffles. Particularly when filled with hazelnut.
9. Torrent files. What a great invention - allows me to download missed TV shows and mp3s.
10. Traveling. Wish I could do more of it. There are so many places I want to go!

10:58 pm - Tower Records ...
Tower Records is going out of business. I almost missed the news, until I saw a guy today holding up a sign advertising the going-out-of-business sale of the Lincoln Park store and then checked the news. So sad :( Anyone know if the Wabash St. store is also closing soon? Or the one in Greenwich Village in NYC (I had a good view of it from my window during my last year of law school)?
In other news, I passed the bar exam. Kinda anti-climactic, actually. Maybe 'cause they send you a letter saying "We are pleased to advise that your application has been recommended for certification by the Committee on Character and Fitness" rather than saying, "Congratulations, you passed the bar exam!" hehe. Or maybe 'cause I am currently interning and still have yet to find a real job as an attorney (though they can't wait to send me to court at my internship, fun fun fun).

10:45 pm - Patti Smith's new song ...
Patti Smith recently wrote and recorded a song about what's happened in Lebanon this summer. Download it at http://www.pattismith.net/news.html. Scroll down and you'll see it. It's called "Qana."

03:24 pm - Life and stuff
So, it's been 2 weeks since the bar exam, and I've been giving myself a vacation before I seriously start job-hunting again. The remainder of my law school loan money is getting smaller, and too much time on my hands gives me too much time to think, which leads to a depressed me. And I'm starting to get tense. I'm just worried that once I start seriously looking again, I'm going to be a wreck, because that's what happened to me during the school year. Nothing is more stressful to me than job-hunting. Law school, fine. Bar exam, fine. I know how to study, take tests, and write papers. But this is where I feel I'm least competent. And I don't like waking up shaking every day - it's not fun. But I also don't want to be unemployed for much longer. So I'm just going to have to figure out how to do this without getting too panicky.
I'm flying down to Florida tomorrow since my parents have been pestering me to visit. I'm staying for a week, and then going to Pittsburgh for a few days to stay with my brother and sister-in-law. I'm not sure this will all be fun (FL never is), but it'll be nice to see my family (as long as I can avoid lectures from my dad - probably not possible though). If there's nothing to do, and if I remain tense, I'll start the job search while I'm in FL.
In other news, I'm on a mission to become more social (I am a recovering U of C'er). So far, this has involved exploring the bars in my neighborhood, i.e., the gay bars. Sidetrack is really nice inside and less than 2 block from me! Spin was disappointing, but it was late on a Monday night when I went, so maybe it's better at other times. I do like the fact that there are no drunk fratty boys at gay clubs. Unfortunately, I also have no hopes of meeting a guy at gay clubs. Where do straight non-fratty guys go??
I also went to a couple of street fests last weekend: my neighborhood's fest, Northalsted Market Days, and the Roscoe Village fest, Retro on Roscoe. Finally saw Hairbangers Ball, a Chicago-area band that covers mostly hair bands, about whom I'd been curious. They were pretty decent, though the singer wasn't pretty enough to really front a hair band. I also saw Funkadesi, whom I've liked since I caught them at U of C in college. And I saw my friend's friend's band - they're starting to grow on me a little bit, but overall sound like an ordinary alternative band. Who knows - maybe they'll surprise me.

01:44 pm - Belated report on the bar exam
So, just as I was getting used to studying 10-12 hours a day, it was time for the bar exam. This involved 2 long days of exam-taking - one day of essays, and one day of multiple choice. The suckiest part was the afternoon essay portion of the first day. 6 essays on the following topics: Secured Transactions, Commercial Paper, Corporations, Partnerships, Federal Jurisdiction, and Wills. 5 of these are subjects that I never wanted to learn about and purposefully avoided in law school. They also have absolutely no relevance to what I want to do with my law degree. And, to make things even better ... they print 7 essay questions in the booklet they hand out, and then tell us not to do a certain one. In our case, we didn't have to do #4. I glanced at it quickly to see what topic I had luckily escaped from. It was Family Law. Family Law! The one subject I actually learned fairly well in law school and which could be relevant to what I want to do. I hate the bar examiners.
And now it's all over. I don't get my results until mid-October. It's not really worrying me too much though. It seems everyone around me was as upset with the afternoon essay portion as I was, and I think I did all right on the other stuff. I think. I hope.

10:40 am - Nocturna?
I think it's next Saturday ... are you Chicago people going?
Also, normal journal posting will resume after the bar exam (which is this coming Tuesday and Wednesday, and which is why having fun next Saturday would be particularly appropriate).

04:21 pm - The CTA Voice!
There's a short article in today's Redeye about the guy who recorded all the CTA announcements. I always wondered if it was a real person, whether he had to record all the run numbers separately (he did - 1 through 999), etc. You can see the article here (at least for now - I don't know how long it'll be up).
I am a little sad that they seem to have changed the Chicago stop announcement on the Red Line. He now says "This is Chicago and State" instead of "This is Chicago." Sorta ruins the whole "This is Grand ... This is Chicago" effect.
01:02 pm
If you have a high speed connection (b/c these are fairly big files), go watch videos of nin and Bauhaus (or at least Peter Murphy) performing together. Trent Reznor singing "Bela Lugosi's Dead" is kind of hot. ;) Did they perform together at the actual concerts, or just at their radio station appearances?
laughingimp, it looks like they did FOUR Joy Divison songs during their Chicago radio appearance (including "Dead Souls"), but unfortunately they don't have audio or video clips of those, just pictures.

12:17 am - Sex offense education
Since I spent the second half of Saturday reviewing criminal law, here's some stupid legal knowledge for you (not really tips, since I don't anticipate that anyone reading this will commit any of the crimes listed below:
To be rape, intercourse must be without consent (unless, of course, your partner is underage. In that case, it doesn't matter that he/she consented or that you were mistaken about his/her age). One situation in which lack of effective consent exists is where the victim is fraudulently caused to believe that the act is not intercourse.
How does that work, exactly?
Seduction consists of inducing, by promise of marriage, an unmarried woman to engage in intercourse.
And, finally (this one isn't a sex offense, but I thought I'd throw it in anyway):
Mayhem is a felony involving either dismemberment or disablement of a bodily part. The recent trend is to abolish mayhem as a separate offense and to treat it instead as a form of aggravated battery.

10:26 pm - Wednesday night already?
Feels more like a Monday - I'm so glad it's not. We had our simulated MBE (multistate bar exam) in my bar review class today. It was 3 hours of multiple choice hell, an hour for lunch, and then 3 more hours of multiple choice hell. If I hadn't been so drained, I would have laughed out loud at the ridiculousness some of the fact patterns. Asphyxiation due to malfunctioning wind tunnels? Heart arrythmias due to anxiety prompted by mock robberies that employees should have known about had they been paying attention at that morning's meeting instead of drinking coffee and eating donuts?
Backtracking to better times (i.e., last weekend), since I never gave an actual update and I'd like to write some happy, non-grumbly stuff in here, Nocturna on Saturday night was great! I went with Nina (who took Sunday off so she could stay out late) and her friend Pavani from med school. Since Nina and I now live 5 BLOCKS from Metro, we had the luxury of being able to walk there from our apartment, and only had to endure a couple blocks of past drunk Cubs fans (I am going to try very hard to stop hating Cubs fans, seeing as how I'm going to have to put up with them now). Got there ... it was pretty empty ... but thankfully it picked up a bit before Diary of Dreams went on. I enjoyed the Diary of Dreams show. Unfortunately, I had only downloaded some of their music a week before the show and listened to it maybe twice while studying, so I didn't know the band's music well enough to really appreciate it. Generally, it takes several listens for me to get past the point of "Oh, this is good stuff" to "This is amazing stuff."
After the concert, we joined (and here is where I first try links to other LJ users)
laughingimp,
llamachameleon,
tragic1, and
tiaralynn on the dance floor (were other people dancing? My memory fails me). I still don't really know how to dance, but it was fun nonetheless.
scaryladysarah played my request, VNV Nation's "Standing," as well as My Scarlet Life's "Fire," which I think may have been the first song I ever danced to at Nocturna, 5 1/2 years ago. Great setlist, overall.
We (the above, plus
oakparkgirl and
mythandra - user names borrowed from
laughingimp's journal :) left Nocturna pretty late, though it was still pretty crowded, and headed to Pick Me Up. Just like the old days. Nina, Pavani, and I walked home from there, since we were only about 2 1/2 blocks from our place (I love living so close - beats trekking to and from Hyde Park!), and it was already light out.
I was surprisingly not tired at all until I actually got home, and I've come to the conclusion that this was because my life has not exactly been a party for the last few years (being in law school in a city where I didn't want to be without most of my friends), and it just feels good to be back where I want to be, surrounded by people who care about me, and to be able to just be myself again. So good that it actually energizes me.

06:09 pm - And the winner is ...
Kobayashi won the hot dog contest at Coney Island again, for the 6th year in a row. I went to this contest 2 years ago, during my one and only full summer in NYC. Sadly, it was one of the highlights of that whole summer.
